About Dr. Tolson
Dr. Danita Tolson grew up understanding that service isn't something you talk about it's something you do. That principle has guided her through a twenty-five year career in healthcare education, a decade of civil rights leadership, and now a campaign for Baltimore County Council.
Dr. Tolson joined the faculty at Coppin State University in 2000 and became Chair of the Department of Nursing in 2013. For twenty-five years she has trained the nurses and healthcare professionals who go on to care for families across Maryland. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from East Carolina University, a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Phoenix, a Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Phoenix, and a Master of Science as a Family Nurse Practitioner from Chamberlain University.
In 2022, the University System of Maryland Board of Regents recognized her with a Faculty Award for exemplary public service in health and social justice citing her dual commitment to academic excellence and community impact.
Dr. Tolson served as president of the Baltimore County Branch NAACP, where she led the organization through some of the most consequential civil rights battles in the county's recent history. She simultaneously served as Maryland State NAACP Health Chairperson, coordinating health advocacy and education across the entire state conference.
Under her leadership, the Baltimore County NAACP organized gun buyback events with county police, led community health outreach, and became a central voice in the fight for fair representation during the redistricting battles of 2021-2022.
When COVID-19 hit and communities of color were being left behind in the vaccination rollout, Dr. Tolson didn't wait for someone else to act. She organized outreach into underserved neighborhoods across Baltimore County, led educational sessions to combat misinformation, and worked to ensure families had access to vaccines. That work earned a commendation from President Biden.
She has also testified before the Maryland General Assembly on prescription drug affordability, tobacco regulation, and hospital staffing always advocating for the families who are most impacted and least heard.
Dr. Tolson is running for Baltimore County Council in District 2 because the issues that come before the Council healthcare, public safety, education, and economic investment are the same issues she's been working on her entire career. She believes District 2 deserves a councilmember who doesn't need on-the-job training because she's already been doing the work.
She lives in the District 2 community and is committed to representing every family from Pikesville to Owings Mills to Woodlawn to Garrison to Stevenson and Worthington.
